Chip Seal 101

Chip seal, also known as tar and chip, is a pavement surface treatment that combines layers of asphalt with layers of fine aggregate. This process is widely used for road maintenance and repair, providing an effective and economical way to extend the life of asphalt surfaces and prevent shifting in primarily aggregate driveways, prolonging their life.

 

Understanding the Chip Seal Process

  • Surface Preparation: The existing pavement is cleaned to remove debris and dirt, ensuring a strong bond between the new layers.

  • Asphalt Application: A layer of hot liquid asphalt is evenly sprayed onto the prepared surface.
